Books come in all shapes and sizes and so do book donors. Most of our books come from personal libraries or church-sponsored book drives. It is an exciting moment when we greet someone at the door with boxes in tote, or when we arrive in the morning to find that someone dropped off books overnight. Sometimes we learn about the way these books have already helped someone in their pastoral ministry, personal growth, or devotional life. We trust that God will continue to use these resources to spiritually build up the inmates who will read them next.
Occasionally we also connect directly with authors and publishers who trust our ministry will make full use of their donated materials. For example, CLI Prison Alliance gladly accepted 250 copies of Every Word: A Reader’s 90-day Guide to the Bible from co-authors, Susan Goodwin and Molly Sawyer. In an email to our team they wrote, “Since the beginning of our project, we have had a great desire to see prisoners have access to God’s Word. It is a privilege to partner with you and your rich 25-year history of making God’s Word accessible to incarcerated men and women.”
Every Word is a devotional resource that guides readers through reading the entire Bible in ninety days. The challenge is to commit 45-60 minutes each day to personally reading through the Scriptures. Included in the book are weekly overviews of that week’s chapters, and a daily reading plan checklist. When paired together with a personal copy of God’s Word, we believe this will be a tremendous resource for making disciples. Beginning this year, we are providing this book to all our 2020 graduates of the “Christian Leadership” inmate Bible study.
